The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island that has been created by using the method of land reclamation. The construction activity has been undertaken by a company named ‘Nakheel’, which is owned by the government of Dubai. Palm Jumeirah is the smallest of the three artificial islands that are created by this company and they are together known as the Palm islands.
The Palm Jumeirah is in the shape of a palm tree, which consists of a trunk, a crown with 17 fronds, and a surrounding crescent that forms an eleven km stretch along the breakwaters. The island is connected to the mainland by a 300 meter bridge and the crescent is connected to the top of the palm by an underwater tunnel. The construction of the island, which began in 2001, has plans for themed boutique hotels, villas, shoreline apartment buildings, beaches, marinas, restaurants, cafes, and a variety of retail outlets.
The Palm Jumeirah has been developed primarily as a retreat and residential area for rest and relaxation, as well as for pursuing leisure activities. The Palm Golden Mile will be located on the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah and will feature more than 200 exclusive boutiques and restaurants. The fronds of the palm will be completely residential areas with the villas housing about 8000 people. A monorail has been planned to run throughout the island.
