Diamonds when mined come as rough diamonds. In order to make them real worthy gemstones which are the most famous and expensive stones in the world, they need a real expert diamond cut. Diamond cut is the very essence of the knowledge regarding diamond handling and so much more depends on the professional diamond cut.
There are hundreds of types of different cuts for diamond; some are more famous than others are. Several big diamonds have received re-cut in order to change their appearance, to prevent them from being stolen or to paste them into different jewellery. Several worldwide famous diamonds have been transformed this way, when this seemed to be the only way to prevent them from being stolen or someone to be murdered for it. That is why the place of most notoriously famous diamonds is unknown and kept in secret. Diamond cut needs perfect expertise and knowledge with perfect tools for it. The facets which a diamond cut produce will decide on how the light will go through the diamond and how it will mirror light. This is called lustre, meaning dispersion of light, which comes through the most perfectly though a non-coloured diamond. That‘s why white or neutral coloured diamonds are the most expensive. During the diamond cut procedure, the diamond will lose weight. Sometimes big diamonds are recreated into several smaller pieces, each one of which gets different cut and pasted in different jewellery. Every jewellery requires different cut. When we are talking about a diamond, which is intended for exhibition, then the cut will be also different. All depends on reaching the best possible shine or lustre of the diamond, no matter in which jewellery they are displayed.
Probably the most famous diamond cuts are the Leo Diamond and the Conventional Diamond cuts. These diamond cuts bring out the shiniest side of the diamond. Conventional Diamond cut is very often used in jewelleries as well. We can also meet many Oval Diamond Cuts, Ruby Diamond Cuts, pear shaped or Opal Diamond Cuts. There are all sorts of different cuts applied by experienced cutters. There are extreme styles of cuts too, but most often, the symmetry is very important when it comes to a good diamond cut. The procedure of the cut is a very delicate procedure, which needs a lot of care.
A diamond cutter examines the following features of a diamond:
– the crystallographic structure of a diamond decides on the exact cutting directions.
– The non-diamond inclusions, which are mostly visible and the expert who makes the diamond cut must decide which ones to remove and which to keep in order for the diamond to be the most flawless.
– The splitting of diamond is very easy if one knows where to hit. With a single blow, a bigger diamond will instantly fall into pieces. Therefore, it is important to decide on how many pieces to recreate. Splitting often happens with a blow of a special hammer. There is a tool called diamond saw but with this, the procedure becomes too slow.
After the cut, the polishing and shaping procedures start instantly. The polishing of a diamond needs tons of time. This is because only this way will the diamond get the perfect polish, which is vital for its final value. After the polishing procedure, the diamond expert re-examines the stone looking for any flaws or mistakes. If there are any flaws, then either they will be removed by re-polishing or crack filling or they will be inserted into jewellery in the smartest way, to hide any imperfections the best possible ways. Paragons are diamonds, which are flawless in shape and clarity.
The diamond cut procedure happens mostly in India where very experienced and cheap workforce works on diamonds all the time. In the past few years, about 92% of the total diamonds exported landed to be cut in India. One of these diamond-cutting places is in Gujarat. From there, they either go to the large Indian diamond bourse or sail to one or more of the diamond bourses where they are sold at the bourse of the Dubai Diamond Federation. Thanks to the long history of business cooperation, and for the hundreds of thousands of Indian merchants and manufacturers living in Dubai, the Dubai diamond trading is flourishing partly thanks to India. In Europe, the two hubs of diamond cut and trading are London and Antwerp.
There are several grading methods in the diamond industry. The grades apply for cuts as well. Only a few Institutes are allowed to publish grading for a diamond. Look for good grading in the official GIA or AGS Certified diamond certificates but beware of paying extra for an “excellent” grading. The importance of a diamond cut is extremely high.
