There are all kinds of racing in the world today. If you go over the Dubai desert, you will find a different kind of racing. Camel racing is a very popular sport in the Dubai desert. Racing provides a means of financial support to those who take care of the camels. Camel racing takes place in October to early in April. It is an annual event. The races take place on several days during the racing season. The days that they have available are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday or they will hold a 5 day race in a large center owned and sponsored by the UAE. There are normally two races, one in the morning beginning at 7:30am and then one in the afternoon at 2:30pm.
They have a total of 15 racetracks that viewer are allowed to go watch the races. Theses stadiums are on the outskirts of the city. They furnish rest tents and they have connecting roads that have electricity, water, telephone and equipment for a live broadcast. They also have doctors standing by with ambulances in case of an emergency.
There are usually 15 to 70 camels that are entered into the race. Sometimes more than that, once the camels are in place at the starting line, they will lift a large barrier and the race has begun. The fans are allowed to carry binoculars with them so they can see, but there are no cameras allowed in the stadium. They can get some light drinks and admission is free.
There is absolutely no betting on races at all. They consider it illegal to bet. The winners will be able to win many nice things. One such item is a luxury car. Camels that have a very successful rate of winning are worth millions to the owners. The best prize of all is the King’s Cup in Dubai. This is such a popular sport, that it is taken very seriously. Their stands are full every Thursday and Friday all during the winter months. Sheikhs tend to be the ones who own the camels. The ages of the jockeys can begin at the age of 6 years to 15 years of age. The government now requires the jockeys to be at least 15 years of age and carry an identification card with them at all times. In order to get the ID, they must pass a physical examination by a doctor.
Camel racing is not only loved by those who watch the sport but by those who participate as well. Their camel racing is very similar to our horse racing in the United States but there are several differences. But either way, it is a sport that they can certainly be very proud of.
